Swimming does help with water polo. You are more able to swim up and down the pool without getting tired and you also gain more speed from swimming. 
If you’re not feeling it then there is no point in doing it and feeling miserable about it :)
it won’t mess up your water polo skills as long as your water polo team does some good conditioning in the beginning and the end of practice (at least thats what our team does)
